I also have a child starting k this year and a soon to be 3 year old. Jean songs are annoying as heck but they work really well for all sorts of things- numbers, weather, sounds, calendar, continents, etc. Summer bridge books are also a very quick way to get prepped. I haven't sent mine to camp yet but we take a long 3 week vacation in the middle of the summer to break it up. If you're going to need to work a lot I would look into some camps if you can afford it. Usually I let them have an hour or so of screen time in the afternoon when we're all feeling a bit worn out. Screens only come on once a day after asking me. When we're at home, the default expectation is that they're playing. We go to the pool, playgrounds, playdates, library, zoo, etc. If you're worried about screen time taking over, just set a daily limit. are all much better than any kind of worksheet. Reading, drawing, play doh, puzzles, board games, water play, pretend play, legos etc. I taught kindergarten and first grade in the past and I never do worksheets, flash cards, etc with my kids. I wouldn't focus on "educational" activities for more than an hour a day with a 5 year old, tops. How many hours a day do you think you'll need to work? Because my top recommendation is playing outside. Whatever they are using at school will likely work at home and should have levels for your 5yo, too. Some we have used are Time 4 Learning, ABC Mouse, ABCya!, Prodigy, Starfall… ask your 10yo’s teacher for recommendations. Then screens… there are lots of fun and educational programs available. ![]() We do those in the kindergarten classroom I work in… I never did them with my own kids but they are pretty great. Look up printable dot sticker activities for your 5yo especially. You could make bins and rotate each day so they don’t get bored. Offer lots of independent fine motor options… playdoh, Lego, kinetic sand, dry erase boards, dot painters, etc. While not really educational, it does provide some social skills and change of scenery. It changed year to year and we haven’t done it in awhile. Sometimes you have to register, sometimes it is drop in. Ours usually offers free playground supervision during specific hours. If that isn’t an option, see if the park district offers playground programs. It is usually fun and a social experience, gets them out of the house, educational, etc. Reminder: you can print this tutorial easily (just the instructions) by clicking on the “PRINT” button in the tutorial card below. If your district offers free or inexpensive summer school, I would recommend that.
